How’s your mind?

“Happiness depends on your mindset and attitude.”― Roy T. Bennett

What an eventful 2021!

I don’t think I would have come as far as I have if it wasn’t for my mindset…

I had a belief that everything would work out in the end, and I worked with my partner on a few goals, and can happily say I achieved a few goals in 2021 including:

Self-Development:

  • Completing a 8-week Mindfulness course
  • Completing an 8-week shadow work course
  • Completing Bethel New Testament Course

Professional:

  • Starting a new career with a company after almost 18 months at home
  • Investing in my coaching business and securing repeat clients
  • Teaching yoga consistently online for over a year

Personal:

  • Moving to a new house and a better area for our family
  • Buying a new car
  • Getting married!

With all the challenges faced, such as the pandemic, slow business in challenging times, losing both my grandparents; and being away from family for almost a year due to travel restrictions. I don’t think I would have managed without the right mindset.

When everything was bleak, I stuck to my routine and motivated myself to stay positive; through reading; journaling and working through my feelings and my fears.

Yes, I had off days, who doesn’t?

I tried hard not to beat myself because of my circumstances and worked hard in staying centred by meditating, eating right, exercising and seeking therapy when I needed it.  Talking to someone you trust is always a remedy for re-shaping your mindset.

So, how are Our mindsets shaped?

Our mindsets have been shaped by our upbringing, genetics, and experiences throughout life.

Consequently, all of us view the world through uniquely different lenses. We believe – what we believe –  about the world and our actions & behaviours mirror these beliefs.

These lenses can act like a set of assumptions through which we interpret everything – at least until we become conscious of them; that’s when we can be in more control of these lenses and our mindsets around them.

Mindsets can be an especially important focus in a coaching framework if we hope to live a fully engaged & happy life and in achieving our goals.

What is coaching?

You can learn about coaching here on my page.

What is a mindset coach?

Mindset coaching focuses on clients’ existing beliefs and patterns of thinking. A good mindset coach works to help clients recognize, question, and revise persistent patterns of thought (Kholghi, 2021)1

But why the focus on mindset in particular?

When we operate in the world with a particular mindset, that mindset will determine how we view and interpret the world around us. That is, we will look to confirm what our often unconscious mindset already believes to be true, whether that serves or hinders us in our lives (Klayman, 1995)2

More about Mindset

A mindset is a series of self-perceptions or beliefs people hold about themselves. These determine behaviour, outlook and mental attitude. For example, believing you are either ‘intelligent’ or ‘unintelligent’.

Two mindsets have been identified by Carol Dweck, (Professor of Psychology at Stanford University).

According to her research, Dweck identified that there are two types of mindsets: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. In a fixed mindset, people believe their qualities are fixed traits and therefore cannot change3. These people document their intelligence and talents rather than working to develop and improve them. They also believe that talent alone leads to success, and effort is not required.

Alternatively, in a growth mindset, people have an underlying belief that their learning and intelligence can grow with time and experience. When people believe they can become smarter, they realize that their effort has an effect on their success, so they put in extra time, leading to higher achievement.

Mindset — a strong and positive one — is essential to developing healthy self-esteem. It is an important tool that affects our daily self-dialogue and reinforces our most intimate beliefs, attitudes and feelings about ourselves.

Success in achieving our goals comes down to a ‘success mindset’. Successful mindsets are those focused on victory, based on positive mental attitudes, empowering inclinations and good habits. Acquiring a success mindset is the sure-fire way to dramatically increase your chance to achieve your goals.4

What do mindset coaches do?

Questions are the primary tool that mindset coaches use to understand how a client views their reality.

s, mindset coaches can uproot clients’ assumptions about the world and their place in it to identify more direct paths to achieving their ideal life.

Another methodology for coaching includes:

Neuro-Linguistic programming ( NLP)

Neurolinguistic programming is the study of how humans create their reality using communication. By combining psychoeducational interventions about neurology and language, coaches can teach clients to organize their thoughts effectively so they can consistently achieve their goals (Erickson International, n.d.)5
