Find Awe in the Ordinary Have you ever paused to Find Awe in the Ordinary Have you ever paused to feel genuinely amazed by the beauty and spender world? Those moments that catch your breath, where time feels suspended, are more powerful than we might realise. Experiencing awe makes us calmer, kinder, and even more creative. It has the remarkable ability to pull us out of our own heads, quiet our egos, and connect us to something bigger than ourselves. Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at UC Berkeley and author of Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life, has spent years exploring how these moments impact us. He describes awe as “the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your current understanding of the world.” This could be a stunning view from a mountaintop or the simple sight of the morning sun painting the sky. One of the most powerful examples he shares is the “overview effect”; a shift in perspective astronauts feel when looking at Earth from space. Awe doesn’t need to be reserved for once-in-a-lifetime experiences. It’s right here, waiting for us in our everyday lives. Ways to Experience Awe in Everyday Life: • Listen to Music that Moves You 🎶: Put on a song or piece of music that you love. Close your eyes and let it wash over you. • Watch the Sky ✨: Take a moment to look at the stars on a clear night or catch a sunrise. Let yourself be still and just watch. • Explore Art 🎨: Go to a museum or find an artist’s work that resonates with you. Let yourself feel whatever comes up. • Notice the Small Wonders 🐦: Watch a bird in flight, feel the texture of sand between your fingers, or notice the detail in a flower. • Spend Time with Kids 👶: If you have children or spend time with them, watch how they experience the world; curious, open, and full of wonder. You don’t have to go looking for awe in extraordinary places. The beauty of this emotion is that it can be found in the ordinary, too. When our attention drifts from the present to internal thoughts, it can often lead to feelings of stress or unhappiness (Killingsworth & Gilbert, Harvard 2010). Mindfulness can help us ground ourselves and reclaim our focus. What Is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is about paying attention—both inwardly to our thoughts and emotions, and outwardly to what’s happening around us. It’s a simple, honest practice of being fully present. Here are the 7 Key Attitudes of Mindfulness (Kabat-Zinn): 1.⁠ ⁠Non-judging: Be an impartial witness to your experience. Notice your judgments and let them pass. 2.⁠ ⁠Patience: Embrace the process; everything unfolds in its own time. 3.⁠ ⁠Beginner’s Mind: Stay curious and open, avoiding the trap of expertise. 4.⁠ ⁠Trust: Trust yourself and your feelings, mistakes and all. 5.⁠ ⁠Non-Striving: Be with yourself as you are, without pushing for change. 6.⁠ ⁠Acceptance: See things as they are, which helps guide appropriate action. 7.⁠ ⁠Letting Go: Release the urge to cling to certain emotions or thoughts. Allow your experience to be just as it is. The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Method is a powerful tool to bring you back to the moment: •⁠ ⁠5: See five things around you. •⁠ ⁠4: Feel four things you can touch. •⁠ ⁠3: Hear three sounds. •⁠ ⁠2: Smell two scents. •⁠ ⁠1: Taste one thing. Mornings can be hectic ; one is barely out of bed before the chaos starts. A gentle reminder - even on the busiest days, one small, simple routine can make all the difference for the day. Here are a few ways to set yourself up for a calmer day 1.⁠ ⁠Breathe 🌬️ – Before you grab your phone or rush out of bed, take a moment to close your eyes and take one deep breath. Just one. It’s a tiny pause, but it can set a calmer tone for your morning. 2.⁠ ⁠Drink Water 💧 – Drinking a glass of water as soon as you can helps wake up your body and refreshes your mind. 3.⁠ ⁠Move a Little 🤸‍♀️ – If a full workout isn’t possible, a quick stretch or reaching for the ceiling a couple of times can help shake off the morning stiffness. 4.⁠ ⁠Set a Simple Intention 📝 – Pick one thing to focus on for the day, just something that keeps you grounded, like “stay patient” or “breathe more. 5.⁠ ⁠Nourish your body 🍏 – Try have a healthy breakfast and if you can’t, a fruit or a handful of nuts is enough to keep your energy going when you’re short on time. ✨ Some mornings are better than others, try find peace and stillness even if it’s for 5 min a day for yourself. 🌟 Your inner critic holds you back🌟 We all 🌟 Your inner critic holds you back🌟 We all have that inner voice—sometimes supportive, often critical. This voice can become especially harsh, becoming what psychologist Eugene Sagan calls the pathological critic. For many of us, this critic is a relentless presence, attacking our self-worth and clouding our perception of ourselves ( and keeping us in a loop of self-doubt, self-criticism and holding us back in a state of fear). The pathological critic thrives on comparison, often pointing out how we fall short when we measure ourselves against others. It sets impossible standards of perfection, punishing us for the smallest mistakes while keeping a detailed album of our failures. Rather than celebrating our achievements, it chooses to remind us of our weaknesses, calling us names like “stupid,” “incompetent,” or “ugly.” This inner critic exaggerates our flaws, convincing us that we “always mess things up” or “never finish anything on time.” It even goes so far as to predict how our friends view us, making us believe they are disappointed or turned off by who we are. This voice is insidious, woven so deeply into our thoughts that we often don’t realise it’s devastating impact. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Recognising the pathological critic is the first step toward reclaiming your self-worth. ✨ Here are some ways to challenge that inner critic: 1. Acknowledge its presence: Understanding that this voice is not the truth but rather a negative perspective can help lessen its power. 2. Challenge the messages: Question the validity of its claims. Are they based on facts or fear? 3. Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a friend. 4. Focus on strengths: Create a list of your accomplishments and qualities that make you proud. Remind yourself of these often. You are not alone in this struggle, and your worth is not defined by the harsh judgments of this inner voice. Maybe they: - Jumped to conclusions - Interrupted you - Judged your words - Seemed distracted - Rushed to give advice - Compared your feelings to their experiences Think about a time when you felt genuinely heard. Was it when someone: - Let you be yourself without judgment - Tried to understand, even if you were struggling to express yourself - Respected your view, even if they disagreed - Gave you space to make your own choices - Held back on immediate advice - Let you process and find your own insights - Graciously accepted your thanks - Listened to understand, not just to respond When was the last time you felt truly listened to? It's so easy to fall into habits that shut others down. But what if we challenged ourselves to listen more deeply? To let others finish their thoughts, to sit with uncomfortable emotions, to resist the urge to "fix" everything? 🩵 Mindfulness is Intention. Integrating mindfu 🩵 Mindfulness is Intention. Integrating mindfulness into our daily lives, minute by minute, can enhance our resilience and overall mental health. 1. Stress Reduction: A study found that even self-administered mindfulness exercises—lasting just a few minutes—can significantly reduce stress levels. 2. State of Mind: Whether you have 10 minutes or 20, both durations of mindfulness meditation can improve your state of mindfulness equally. It’s not about the length; it’s about the quality of presence you cultivate. Embrace those short moments of awareness throughout your day. 3. Trait Mindfulness Matters: trait mindfulness refers to how naturally inclined someone is to stay aware of the present moment without reacting emotionally or judging it. Your existing level of trait mindfulness plays a role. People with higher trait mindfulness tend to experience greater decreases in anxiety after a 20-minute meditation session compared to a 10-minute session. Knowing your own mindfulness tendencies can guide your practice. Ways to incorporate mindfulness into your routine: Breath Awareness: Take a moment to focus on your breath. Notice the sensation of air entering and leaving your nostrils or the rise and fall of your chest. This simple practice can ground you in the present moment. Body Scan: Close your eyes and mentally scan your body from head to toe. Pay attention to any areas of tension or discomfort. Breathe into those areas and release the tension. This practice promotes relaxation and body awareness. Five Senses Check-In: Engage your senses. What do you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel right now? This practice helps you connect with your environment and brings you back to the present. Gratitude Pause: Pause throughout the day to appreciate something—a beautiful flower, a kind gesture, or a moment of stillness. Gratitude cultivates positivity and resilience. Mindful Eating: When you eat, savour each bite. Notice the flavours, textures, and smells. Despite being surrounded by people, we can feel isolated, yearning for genuine connections with others. I recently spent a weekend at a yoga retreat, mingling with like-minded individuals. During one serendipitous moment, I witnessed two strangers connect ; a lady seeking work and another looking for an assistant for her growing business. They exchanged numbers, and it felt like destiny in action. How many times has that happened to you? Where you meet someone you helps you, or introduces you to someone that then changes your life! The magic of connection is real. Life becomes richer when we intentionally create meaningful relationships with those around us by being open to experiences, connecting, and meeting people. Here are some ways to create meaningful connections: SHOW GENUINE INTEREST IN PEOPLE’S LIVES Ask questions beyond the surface. What are their passions? What keeps them awake at night? When you actively engage, you lay the groundwork for deeper connections. BE AUTHENTIC AND SHARE VULNERABILITIES Share your own struggles, joys, and vulnerabilities. When you reveal your humanity, others feel safe doing the same. COMMUNICATE FROM THE HEART Clear communication bridges hearts. Maintain eye contact, smile, and use positive body language. Listen actively, validating their feelings. EXPRESS GRATITUDE SINCERELY A heartfelt “thank you” or a specific compliment can brighten someone’s day. Acknowledge their contributions—big or small—and watch connections deepen. CHERISH SHARED MOMENTS Coffee dates, walks, or shared hobbies create lasting memories. Quality time isn’t about quantity; it’s about the depth of the connection. Loneliness need not be a permanent companion.
