Stuck in the Past

We all have moments where we find ourselves stuck in the past—whether it’s thinking about an old mistake, a missed opportunity, or reliving happy memories that no longer exist.

While reflecting on the past can help us learn, living in it and ruminating it over and over in our minds, can hold us back from experiencing the present.

When we cling to what’s already happened, it becomes difficult to move forward with clarity and peace. Our emotional energy gets tied up in things we can’t change, instead of focusing on what we can control: our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Why Let Go:

💫 You Deserve Peace: Constantly replaying past mistakes or regrets can lead to anxiety and frustration. Learning to release these memories is the first step toward finding emotional peace and freedom.

🌻 Growth Happens in the Present: The present moment is where you grow, heal, and become stronger. Holding onto the past prevents you from embracing new possibilities and experiences.

🌟 Create Space for New Opportunities: When you stop focusing on “what was,” you open yourself up to “what could be.” New relationships, experiences, and successes come from letting go of the past.

How to Break Free:

🌼 Acknowledge It: Recognizing what you’re holding onto is the first step. Whether it’s an old argument, a missed opportunity, or a long-gone relationship, face it with honesty. Move past it, don’t dwell too long in this space.

Why Pausing Matters:

🧘‍♀️ Reclaim Your Calm: Just a few mindful breaths can lower stress and activate your body’s relaxation response. A 3-minute pause can do wonders for your nervous system.

✨ Boost Your Clarity: Pausing helps your mind reset, allowing for clearer thinking and better decision-making.

💪 Enhance Your Resilience: Regular pauses build emotional resilience, helping you respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

Ways to Embrace the Pause:

🌬️ Mindful Breathing: When overwhelmed, stop and take 3-5 deep breaths. Inhale deeply, hold, then exhale slowly, releasing stress with each breath.

🌳 Mini Nature Breaks: Step outside for a moment. Feel the sun, listen to the birds, or touch the grass. Nature grounds us in the present.

🌼 Gratitude Moments: Reflect on three things you’re grateful for, shifting focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant.

🧘‍♂️ Body Scan: Close your eyes and scan your body for tension. Breathe into those areas, releasing stress with each exhale.

🕊️ Micro Meditations: Set a timer for 1-2 minutes and focus on your breath or repeat a calming word like “peace” or “calm.”

Recently, I made it a priority to step away, spend quality time with my family, and travel to reconnect with what truly matters. I’ll be back in September, refreshed and ready.

Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. By taking this time for myself, I’ve gained clarity, deepened my relationships, and focused on what’s truly important while nurturing my well-being. These moments of rest empower us to give our best, both personally and professionally.

Here are a few tips to make rest a priority:

- Schedule Downtime: Just as you schedule meetings, block out time for rest. It can be as simple as a short walk or a weekend getaway.

- Disconnect to Reconnect: Unplug from work emails and social media to fully immerse yourself in the present moment.

- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to signs of burnout or fatigue, and allow yourself the rest you need without guilt.

Growth isn’t always about giant leaps. Sometimes, it’s the small, mindful steps that bring us closer to where we want to be. 🌿

Progress can be as simple as taking a moment to reflect, adjust, and move forward with intention. It’s not about how fast you go, but about how present you are in the journey.

Here are 3 tips to embrace mindful growth:

Focus on Small Wins: Don’t overlook the little victories. Each small achievement is a building block toward your larger goals. Take time to acknowledge and celebrate these moments—they add up over time and keep you motivated. 🏆
Stay Present: It’s easy to get caught up in where you want to be, but true growth happens when you focus on where you are right now. Practice mindfulness by being fully engaged in the present moment, appreciating the process rather than fixating on the outcome. 🧘‍♀️
Be Patient: Growth takes time, and it’s important to be kind to yourself along the way. There will be setbacks and challenges, but they’re all part of the journey. Trust that with each step, you’re moving closer to your goals, even if it doesn’t always feel like it. ⏳

Mindful growth means embracing the process, being patient with yourself, and seeing how far you have come.

🩵 Mindfulness is Intention.

Integrating mindfulness into our daily lives, minute by minute, can enhance our resilience and overall mental health.

1. Stress Reduction: A study found that even self-administered mindfulness exercises—lasting just a few minutes—can significantly reduce stress levels.

2. State of Mind: Whether you have 10 minutes or 20, both durations of mindfulness meditation can improve your state of mindfulness equally. It’s not about the length; it’s about the quality of presence you cultivate. Embrace those short moments of awareness throughout your day.

3. Trait Mindfulness Matters: trait mindfulness refers to how naturally inclined someone is to stay aware of the present moment without reacting emotionally or judging it. Your existing level of trait mindfulness plays a role. People with higher trait mindfulness tend to experience greater decreases in anxiety after a 20-minute meditation session compared to a 10-minute session. Knowing your own mindfulness tendencies can guide your practice.

Ways to incorporate mindfulness into your routine:

Breath Awareness: Take a moment to focus on your breath. Notice the sensation of air entering and leaving your nostrils or the rise and fall of your chest. This simple practice can ground you in the present moment.

Body Scan: Close your eyes and mentally scan your body from head to toe. Pay attention to any areas of tension or discomfort. Breathe into those areas and release the tension. This practice promotes relaxation and body awareness.

Five Senses Check-In: Engage your senses. What do you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel right now? This practice helps you connect with your environment and brings you back to the present.

Gratitude Pause: Pause throughout the day to appreciate something—a beautiful flower, a kind gesture, or a moment of stillness. Gratitude cultivates positivity and resilience.

Mindful Eating: When you eat, savour each bite. Notice the flavours, textures, and smells. Eating mindfully enhances your enjoyment and helps regulate your appetite.

Connection Creates Meaning 💜

In our fast-paced, digitally connected world, loneliness often lurks in the shadows. Despite being surrounded by people, we can feel isolated, yearning for genuine connections with others.

I recently spent a weekend at a yoga retreat, mingling with like-minded individuals. During one serendipitous moment, I witnessed two strangers connect ; a lady seeking work and another looking for an assistant for her growing business. They exchanged numbers, and it felt like destiny in action.

How many times has that happened to you? Where you meet someone you helps you, or introduces you to someone that then changes your life!

The magic of connection is real.

Life becomes richer when we intentionally create meaningful relationships with those around us by being open to experiences, connecting, and meeting people.

Here are some ways to create meaningful connections:

SHOW GENUINE INTEREST IN PEOPLE’S LIVES
Ask questions beyond the surface. What are their passions? What keeps them awake at night? When you actively engage, you lay the groundwork for deeper connections.
BE AUTHENTIC AND SHARE VULNERABILITIES
Share your own struggles, joys, and vulnerabilities. When you reveal your humanity, others feel safe doing the same.
COMMUNICATE FROM THE HEART
Clear communication bridges hearts. Maintain eye contact, smile, and use positive body language. Listen actively, validating their feelings.
EXPRESS GRATITUDE SINCERELY
A heartfelt “thank you” or a specific compliment can brighten someone’s day. Acknowledge their contributions—big or small—and watch connections deepen.
CHERISH SHARED MOMENTS
Coffee dates, walks, or shared hobbies create lasting memories. Quality time isn’t about quantity; it’s about the depth of the connection.

Loneliness need not be a permanent companion. Reach out, connec ; one heartfelt conversation at a time. 🌟💙

Self-care is Sacred.

There exists a delicate balance between maintaining healthy habits, setting boundaries, and honouring our self-care.

It seems to be a cycle for me, moving between giving and taking, and often giving too much to others—more than to myself. I aim to always do my best, with perfectionist tendencies, but as I get older, I see that this is neither healthy nor sustainable.

Why do we work so hard and place our needs last?

Achieving a good work/life balance is a priority for many. A recent survey from Deloitte showed that this balance is the trait most admired in peers and a top reason for choosing a current role.

How can we balance and prioritise boundaries in our personal and work lives?

💛 Know Your Limits: Reflect on past experiences that were draining or negative. Use these insights to set clear boundaries for yourself.

💛 Healthy Habits: Establish boundaries around your daily routines. For instance, turn off devices at a specific time each night to promote restful sleep.

💛 Interpersonal Boundaries: Define how much contact you have with others, what types of interactions you engage in, and how much time you reserve for yourself.

Self-Care Strategies:

🩵 Rest and Recharge: Prioritise adequate rest and self-care routines. A well-rested mind and body are essential for overall well-being.

🩵 Nourish Your Body: Pay attention to nutrition and exercise. A balanced diet and physical activity contribute to both physical and mental health.

🩵 Emotional Control: Practice emotional regulation. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment and find healthy ways to express them.

🩵 Avoid Overcommitment: Learn to say no when necessary. Overcommitting can lead to burnout and compromise self-care.

🩵 Coping Skills: Develop effective coping mechanisms to manage stress and challenges.

Achieving sustainable wellness involves a delicate integration and balance between self-care and boundaries.

Be compassionate toward yourself, and honour your needs without guilt. 🌟

🌊 Calming the Seas of Chaos 🌊

I was coaching a client this morning who uses metaphors as we chat. He said that the last few days he had felt like he was drowning in the ocean, being swung from one side to the next like a buoy with no control.

As I listened and coached, spending some time with him, I guided him to define his structure, goals, and ways to overcome his challenges. He shared that he now felt like he had a life jacket and a boat at his disposal. He felt more in control in his ocean of chaos.

As someone who loves imagery and metaphors, I enjoyed his analogy and felt the need to share.

How are you taking control of your life amidst the seas of chaos? Here are a few tips:

🌟 Like a sailor, map out your journey. Set clear goals—big and small. These goals will be your guide when the waves get wild.

🧩 Challenges will come, break challenges into small, manageable pieces. Tackle them one at a time.

🤝 Reach out for support when you need it.

⏸️ When the seas get too rough, take a moment to pause and reflect.

⛈️ Storms will pass. Stay resilient and keep your focus.

Why can’t we be open and honest? I believe it's about trust and values.

Trust is the foundation of any meaningful relationship. It's built through honest communication and strengthened when we align our actions with our values. Living by our core values shows integrity and authenticity.

Aligning our actions with our values maintains transparency, reinforcing trust and authenticity in all interactions. Being open and truthful encourages others to do the same, fostering trust and collaboration.

As a wellness counsellor, I see the power of vulnerability daily. It's a strength that deepens connections and builds genuine, collaborative relationships.

Here are tips to be more open, honest, and vulnerable:

- Start Small: Share thoughts and feelings with someone trusted. Gradually expand this openness.

- Listen Actively: Create a judgment-free space for honest sharing.

- Honest Self-Reflection: Understand your values for authentic communication.

- Set Boundaries: Respect personal limits while being honest.

- Embrace Imperfection: Vulnerability is about authenticity, not perfection.

- Seek Support: Consider talking to a wellness counsellor for guidance.

"Self-care is selfish"

This week has been a LONG yet productive one. However, I think I may have “bit” more than I can chew, and I am feeling tired. I’ve been battling the flu for a week and have kept “pushing” as I have commitments to others, my family, and my clients.

When you are an entrepreneur, it’s all too easy to lose sight of your own well-being. As a wellness counsellor, I understand the importance of self-care, yet even I sometimes forget to pause and care for myself. We often prioritize others, neglecting the simple truth that we can't pour from an empty cup.

Balance... What is it?
Is it small, consistent efforts to nurture our minds, bodies, and spirits, or always making time for ourselves? What to do when your time is finite and invaluable? Self-care is selfish and essential. It means setting boundaries, taking breaks, and allowing ourselves the grace to rest.

It’s okay to step back and breathe…
Whether it's a quiet moment with a cup of tea, a walk in nature, or a few minutes of meditation, these small acts of self-kindness can rejuvenate our souls and prevent burnout. Here are a few tips to help maintain balance:

- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and prioritize your own needs without guilt.

- Schedule Downtime: Just as you would schedule a meeting, set aside time for relaxation and hobbies.

- Practice Mindfulness: Engage in activities that bring you into the present moment, like deep breathing or gentle yoga.

- Stay Connected: Maintain relationships with friends and loved ones for support and joy.

- Nourish Your Body: Eat well, stay hydrated, and ensure you get enough sleep.

Caring for others starts with caring for ourselves. As hard as it is, I am trying to make a promise to prioritize my well-being so I can care for others.

Navigating the seas of stress
It never rains but pours.

Daily stressors can have significant impacts on our physical and psychological well-being. But what about the accumulation of stress over time?

Stressor pile-up refers to the accumulation of multiple stressors over time.
Instead of experiencing isolated instances of stress, we find ourselves facing a series of stressors that build up and potentially compound the overall stress burden which can lead to burnout and disengagement.

Such pile ups of “rain storms”, can occur within a short period, or extend over longer periods- but ultimately they become heavy to carry.

🧠 Digging Deeper into Stress: A recent study looked at how everyday stress affects our mood, focusing on both the bad and the good feelings. Scientists checked out info from a 30-day diary study with nearly 300 adults of different ages.

📊 What They Found: When stress builds up over a week, it makes us feel more negative, no matter what other stress is going on. Older adults seemed to handle this stress build-up better than younger adults.

🌞 Looking on the Bright Side:Surprisingly, feeling good each day didn't seem to be affected by all the stressors. It seems our ability to feel positive isn't as affected by daily stress as our negative feelings are.

🔍 Why It Matters: Knowing how stress affects us every day can help us find better ways to deal with it, especially as we get older. It shows how important it is to keep stress under control for our overall well-being.

👴👵 Age and Stress: While older adults may handle stress buildup better, they still feel the effects of daily stress just like younger people do.
Stress affects all of us, but as we get older, we might need to change how we handle it.

Learning how to manage stress can be a big help in staying emotionally healthy.
Recognizing the impact of stress build-up can help us find better ways to handle stress in our daily lives.

As someone who helps others with their wellness, my goal is to give people the tools they need to handle stress, whether it's through simple relaxation techniques, making healthy choices, or reaching out for support when they need it.

Do you feel in control?

It’s my last journey around the sun in my thirties, and approaching 40 has been profoundly impactful for me.

It’s prompted me to re-examine the past decade—reflecting on my achievements, growth, gains, and losses.

During my teens and twenties, I felt lost, allowing life to happen to me rather than for me. I lacked a true anchor or guiding compass beyond myself.

Losing a parent and sibling, and marrying young, left me feeling adrift and out of control.

It took me many years to realise that I do have control, and that my mindset plays a pivotal role in this shift.

🤍 While the concept of locus of control—our belief in influencing our lives—may not be new, it remains powerful. Some believe they control their destiny (internal locus), while others attribute life's events to external factors, avoiding responsibility.

🤍 Having a sense of mastery—feeling capable and in control—can significantly impact our ability to navigate tough times, like job loss, grief, or health challenges. Self-efficacy—the belief in our capabilities—shapes our reality.

As we age, our sense of control may evolve, particularly amidst life's uncertainties.

🤍 The support of those around us influences our perceived control.

Nurturing our sense of control empowers us to face life's challenges with resilience.

Begin by leaning on your support system, then look inward; you'll find your anchor.
